World Health Organization Faces Significant Staff Reduction After US Financial Pullout
The international public health agency disclosed intentions to reduce its workforce by almost a fourth β amounting to over two thousand positions β before mid-2026.
Funding Crisis Triggers Major Restructuring
This move comes following the US, formerly the agency's biggest donor, pulled out funding previously this year.
Washington was contributing about eighteen percent of the organization's total funding, creating a substantial budgetary shortfall.
Projected Staff Reductions
Based on organizational estimates, the staff is expected to drop from nine thousand four hundred and one posts in early 2025 to approximately 7,030 by June 2026.
This decrease of two thousand three hundred and seventy-one positions comprises staff reductions, retirements, and natural departures.
"This year was one of the most difficult in our existence, as we undertook a challenging but essential journey of prioritisation and realignment," stated the organization's leader.
Budget Shortfall Remains
This Switzerland-headquartered body now confronts a budget gap of $1.06bn for the 2026-2027 period, representing almost a fourth of its required funding.
The amount represents an improvement from a prior estimated gap of $1.7bn reported in spring.
Not Included Funding
The financial calculations exclude a further 1.1 billion dollars in potential contributions from ongoing discussions with multiple donors.
The spokesperson for the organization stated that the current unsecured portion of the budget is in fact smaller than in earlier periods, attributing this to multiple factors:
- Reduced overall budget
- Initiation of a new fundraising effort
- An increase in member states' mandatory contributions
This restructuring process is currently approaching its completion, allowing the agency to progress with a reshaped structure.
