Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users using such medications should be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting generally see a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections accounts for the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

People who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.

The struggle is compounded if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural management.
