UN Ends Restrictions on President of Syria Before White House Visit
The UN Security Council gave the green light to a US resolution ending penalties on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his presidential meeting the following week.
He was appointed provisional head of state following his leadership in a rebel offensive that removed the former president in winter 2024, ending thirteen long years of domestic strife.
The US representative UN ambassador Mike Waltz stated the United Nations delivered "a powerful diplomatic message" that acknowledged Syria entered "a new era" since Assad was deposed.
Sharaa was under global penalties in his role as head of the religious organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which was formerly linked to the extremist organization. The US removed the group from its registry of global extremist entities during July.
More Penalties Removed
The UN also removed restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Anas Khattab.
The Syrian diplomatic chief applauded the lifting of the penalties, stating online: "Syria expresses its appreciation toward America and to friendly nations for assisting the Syrian nation and citizens."
Imminent Washington Talks
President Sharaa's presidential meeting at the start of the week comes after American leader Donald Trump stated the Middle Eastern president achieved "significant advancement" towards bringing peace to the previously divided state.
Both presidents held discussions on their first occasion in May, during Trump's Riyadh trip during a visit to the region.
Subsequent to that discussion, the US president described him as a "resilient figure" having a "formative history".
The HTS organization he led operated as the terrorist network's partner inside the country prior to breaking relations during 2016.
Earlier American Trip
Monday's visit does not represent his initial visit to the US this year. This past fall, he became the initial Syrian president to speak before the UN General Assembly in Manhattan after approximately sixty years.
In his speech, he declared the nation was "restoring its proper position across international circles" and expressed solidarity toward Gaza's residents.
