The UK government has included 11 further destinations to its official alert list concerning the dangers of methanol toxicity from adulterated spirits.

This updated travel guidance covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "a global increase in the number of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol toxicity.

Just last month, the government had earlier placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing register, after a number of notable cases such as the deadly death of six travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being cautions that even tiny quantities of methanol can cause permanent eye damage or death within 12 to 48 hrs.

What is Methanol and How is it Utilized?

Toxic alcohol is a poisonous chemical commonly used in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. This substance is not designed for ingestion.

Although it is generated during the production of alcoholic drinks, reputable manufacturers reduce it to low, safe levels for drinking through the distillation process.

But in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to save money, and as it is flavorless and scentless, it is impossible to notice.

Government Guidance for Tourists

Government official the minister said that each tourist should know the signs of toxic alcohol poisoning.

"If you're drinking spirits in foreign countries, stick to reputable establishments and steer clear of unlicensed drinks or free shots," Falconer warned.

"If something feels off, for example a hangover that's way worse than normal or blurred eyesight – seek medical attention right away."

The full roster of countries noted as posing a risk of industrial alcohol contamination presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
