At least thirteen individuals perish and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled persistent apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
